Understanding the holistic human requires looking at a person, not just a diagnosis, but as the embodiment of various and complicated contextual factors beyond their control. It requires a profound understanding of human behavior, and the external factors that impact the human condition. By examining the impact of social, economic, or cultural issues at play in an individual’s life, we can use our voice to build meaningful connections, learn from each other, and offer more effective support.
COVID-19 has entered our lives, causing a global pandemic and decentralizing the general healthcare infrastructure. Services are being reshaped, and we are changing the way we think about the world. Many of us are going through a transformative period in which we’re looking at the world differently. We’re feeling isolated and disconnected and everything feels unnatural, and thats because we have lived through a sustained period where our core human needs were not being met.
I have also noticed how the chaos many of us are experiencing to some degree has propelled a movement towards preventative and alternative care. We are now reassessing our own self-care and giving attention to our mental and physical health, giving these facets of health a more imperative place in our society. We are more interested in exploring new recipes and ingredients because we are cooking at home more than ever. We have slowed down, finally having the time and space to see more clearly than ever.
Working in healthcare through the pandemic, I have begun to reconsider where I want my own involvement to be within our community. Our entire approach to medicine needs to change. Looking back at ancient medicine, the interconnectedness of the spiritual, psychological, and functional was the measure for health. Currently we, as a society, treat our bodies with chemicals instead of trying to achieve alignment.
Primary Food, or nonfood sources of nourishment, are what really fuel us. The excitement and rapture of daily life can feed us more completely than any food. In corporate healthcare, elements like Relationship, Career, and Spiritual Connection are not considered when treating disease. We need to look at the whole picture. Secondary Food is where we look at sustenance: whole foods, dietary theories, and nutrition education, to figure out what works best for your body. I want to guide you through pushing your boundaries and allowing you to gain access to what holds you hostage. You can find your inner light and feel growth every step of the way.
